Taking Care of Your Garden or Lawn During Winter

Winter is a challenge to gardeners and homeowners maintaining a beautiful lawn. In nature, animals and plants have adapted different ways to survive snow and ice and thus, many of garden plants can endure several degrees below freezing point without problems. However, since many gardens nowadays have plants hailed from other parts of the world, where ice and snow are totally unknown phenomenon, several gardens may require extra care during the cold winter season.

Most garden plants, but not all, are quite hardy and can survive all but the most intense weather conditions such as strong storms, floods and extreme winter temperatures. It is advisable to do some research about the types of plants you have in your garden and find out whether or not the plants can survive snow and ice. Some plants, especially the not hardy ones may require some specialist care and warmth during the worst of the winter season. Typically, lawns can survive a considerable amount of time under heavy snowfall. However, it is advisable not to walk on your lawn while it is covered with snow as there is a chance that you can cause undue damage.

The weight of the snow on the branches of your trees and shrubs can be sufficient to cause bough breakage. In order to prevent damage and breakage, you can use a broom to know off heavy snow from the branches.
